BIRTHDAY POEM
A wearable literary work by Gao Lingling.
“Birthday”
The doctor digs through the flesh-tomb,
Unearthing a witness to a failed love.
Facing scenes of violence from the start,
One must spend a lifetime trying to understand emotion.
Fire.
Cherry knife.
Red viscous pulp.
This candle-offering ritual—
Whose day of suffering is it?
I only remember:
Without permission, I unauthorizedly halted
The beginning of the chain of suffering.
ABOUT THE GARMENT
A white ruffle tank top created from the imagery of the poem. Three layers of ruffles echo the piped frosting of a birthday cake, while the strawberry cake motif across the chest gives the piece a sweetness that feels delicate, celebratory, and faintly unsettling.
This series of works brings the visual language of a birthday cake—cream, ruffles, candles, sweetness—into contact with a poem about birth, violence, love, and the beginning of suffering.
